Introduction

Papaya is a fruit, and it contain high levels of antioxidants vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Diets high in antioxidants may reduce the risk of heart disease,  diabetes, cancer, aiding in digestion.

Growing Papaya

Night temperature below 120-140 C for several hours during winter season affects its growth and production severely. It is very much sensitive to frost, strong winds and water stagnation. Deep, well drained sandy loam soil is ideal for cultivation of papaya.

Duration and Season

Pawpaw can be grown anywhere in Nigeria and it is eaten by all tribes. We have the traditional variety which starts producing after 9 months. But dwarf hybrid starts producing after 3 months. The botanical name for pawpaw is Carica papaya. Pawpaw fruits all year round under warm weather.

Sowing and harvest period

Their maturity depends on the variety planted. Hybrid variety will start producing between 4-6 months.
