Introduction

Tomatoes are fruits that are considered vegetables by nutritionists. Botanically, a fruit is a ripened flower ovary and contains seeds. Tomato health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. They are also a great source of vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K.

Growing Tomato

Tomatoes are not super fussy about what type of soil they are grown in. As with most garden vegetables, they do well in well-drained, fertile loam with a pH of 5.8 to 7.0. Mix several inches of organic compost or aged animal manure into the upper 4-8 inches of soil before planting. 

Duration and Season

The months of December, January, February and March can be the best months to plant tomato in Nigeria for some farmers.

Sowing and harvest period

When tomatoes produce fruits many varieties of tomatoes take 70 to 80 days from the time that plants are placed in the ground to the time that fruits are ready to harvest.
