Introduction

Rice is the seed of the grass species Oryza sativa (Asian rice) or less commonly Oryza glaberrima (African rice). As a cereal grain, domesticated rice is the most widely consumed staple food for over half of the world’s human population, especially in Asia and Africa. Rice have several vitamins and minerals which includes vitamin B1, vitamin B6, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, manganese.

Growing Rice

Clay or clay loams are most suited for its cultivation. Such soils are capable of holding water for long and sustain crop. Rice being a semi-aquatic crop, grows best under sub-merge conditions. Rice is cultivated in almost all types of soils with varying productivity.

Duration and Season

Based on these studies, rice yields are greatest and most consistent from year to year when varieties are planted in late March. Averaged over all the data, it can achieve 95% or greater of its maximum yield potential when planted from March 20 to April 20.

Sowing and harvest period

The biological cycle of rice (days from seedling to harvest) ranges from 95 days (very early varieties) to almost 250 days (very late varieties).
